Following government health directives, the Archdiocese of Kampala has issued updated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all places of worship. These measures are designed to prevent the spread of Ebola while safeguarding the spiritual life of the faithful.
The new guidelines, communicated by the Liturgy Department, apply to all liturgical celebrations – Sunday Masses, weekday services, funerals, weddings, and other parish gatherings.
What Has Changed?
In light of the Ebola outbreak, the following measures must now be observed in every parish and worship space across the Archdiocese:
| Category | Requirement |
| Hand Hygiene | Handwashing facilities with clean water and soap at all entry and exit points. Alcohol-based sanitizers should also be available. |
| Temperature Checks | Thermo-scanners or temperature guns must be placed at all entry points to check worshippers before they enter. |
| Signage | Ebola prevention messages must be displayed clearly in both English and local languages. |
| Ventilation | Worship spaces must have proper airflow. Avoid enclosed, poorly ventilated rooms. |
| Physical Contact | No handshakes, hugging, or any unnecessary direct physical contact. |
| Physical Distancing | Worshippers should maintain safe distance where space allows. Avoid crowding. |
| Sick Persons | Anyone feeling unwell should stay home and seek medical care immediately. Do not attend services. |
Guidance for Priests and Liturgical Leaders
The directives also include specific instructions for clergy and those leading worship:
- Avoid touching congregants during prayers and blessings
- Do not lay hands on worshippers during services
- Refrain from shaking hands before, during, or after Mass
- Continuously remind the faithful about Ebola prevention measures
- Encourage sick parishioners to go to health facilities instead of coming to worship
These measures replace many familiar gestures of closeness and blessing. They are temporary but necessary for the protection of all.
The Archdiocese reminds all Catholics that following these SOPs is not just a legal requirement – it is an act of charity. Protecting yourself and others from infection is a concrete way of living out the Gospel command to love your neighbour.
The Eucharist remains the source and summit of our faith. For now, we approach it with extra care, not less devotion.
